Finding a Gastroenterologist
Finding a GI doctor/IBD specialist you are comfortable with and trust can be tough. Here are some places to start.
Rainbows in Gastro: Physicians associated with Rainbows in Gastro will always be a great option - their main mission is caring for LGBTQ+ people with gastrointestinal disease, and increasing our quality of care. I can personally vouch for this one with the Pride and Poop seal of approval - every Rainbows in Gastro gastroenterologist (and hepatologist!) is the best of the best.
There are 3 IBD clinics established that specifically focus on the healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ people with IBD: Capitol Digestive Care in Washington, DC, Mayo Clinic IBD Pride Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and a new LGBTQ+ focused IBD clinic at UCSF! I have not gone to either of them as a patient, but I know them all, and I can 100% give each of them as doctors and people the Pride and Poop stamp of approval. Highly recommend.
OutCare has a directory of LGBTQ+ affirming providers across a variety of specialties
For example this page: LGBTQ+ affirming gastroenterologists near you (and "nearest me" on here is 18 hours away LOL) but it is not exclusive! MY GI is fantastic, but he isn’t on here, so you may have to do some asking around.
The CDC has an *archived* directory of LGBT Health Services and Clinics in each state - it is no longer being updated, so double check if these resources are still available
LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory also has a directory of affirming providers across a range of specialties
When browsing physician profiles, look for ‘LGBTQ Health’ if they have areas of interest listed
Ask around! Social media can be a helpful tool for looking for doctors who are kind and affirming - a vast majority aren’t listed on any directory
